Working with NASA

Before I left Microsoft I was fortunate enough to work on some pretty exciting projects with NASA that involved capturing the preparations for launch of Shuttle Endeavour using Photosynth and training astronauts at the International Space Station Mock-Up in Houston. The folks I worked with asked me to do a little write up about my adventures and you can read more about it here.

tilt shift video

This is a technique using a special lens that I'm pretty excited to try. Love how it makes the world seem tiny.

six sense

I'm fascinated by Augmented Reality (AR). I've written about this previously over on 8ninths, but advances are occurring every month and once battery life, form factor and cost issues are overcome this will be the defacto way you interact with the environment. Overlays of information that are served through your glasses or projected on surfaces. The seamless integration of the real and the virtual. Some might see this as dystopian but I think this is a step forward for man kind and a world I want to help shape.

This recently released TED video articulates just how impactful this tech could become.

photosynth meets the mainstream

Today was a proud moment for me for many reasons. Not only was I able to witness the swearing in of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States but the technology that I helped to launch was a central part of the CNN coverage. Photosynth that takes hundreds or thousands of normal 2D images and recreates a 3D scene that allows you to naviagate the full detail of each image, in your browser.

CNN invited viewers to submit their images and in real-time the Photosynth team, 'synthed' them together to create the scene you see below:

You can read more about the history of Photosynth here.

Bere's the video of Photosynth being demonstrated on CNN with a Perceptive Pixel Touch Screen Wall: Nice Work Guys! You can't get more publicity than an entire nation tuned in and watching!

The most effective advertising occurs when the marketer evokes strong emotions and ties it to the brand. Sony nails it with this one.
